Your personality type can define the character and direction of your business, for better or worse, according to Matthew Bayfield, partner of consumer psychology and market research firm Tree. Identifying what type you are can help you structure your business to play to your strengths and mitigate your weaknesses.
Tree has identified nine personality types, and while they can all be entrepreneurs, some will flourish more than others.

The High-flyer
You’re at your best on the move, juggling several tasks and deftly changing plans when you need to. Freedom and flexibility suit you more than rigidity and structure. But this adaptability can be seen as indecisiveness – have grounded, decisive people around you to help with the management side.
Suitable sectors: design; leisure, travel and entertainment; sales and marketing.
Famous High-flyer: Martha Lane Fox, co-founder of Lastminute.com.
The Implementer
Making order out of chaos is your forte, and caution is your middle name. That said, there’s nothing you can’t deliver if you put your mind to it. And what you deliver will be measured, thought through, checked, double-checked and on budget.
Suitable sectors: finance, construction, manufacturing
Famous Implementer: The late Dame Anita Roddick, founder of the Body Shop.
The Influencer
You are an anchor in rough seas. Others feel secure in your presence and look to you for guidance. You are conscientious, consistent and controlled in all you do, although you can be so busy anticipating problems and finding solutions that you forget to seek out opportunities.
Work alongside someone who’s keen to brainstorm new ideas while you keep an eye on the essentials.
Suitable sectors: construction, manufacturing, finance.
Famous Influencer: Gordon Ramsay, chef and restaurateur.
The Hunter
You’re great at spotting new opportunities. Your pleasure and enthusiasm in finding and attaining status and power mean you’re not afraid of hard work. You thrive on pressure and uncertainty, unafraid to search out new possibilities. Work with someone who’s content to take a back seat and sort out the nitty-gritty while you forge ahead.
Suitable sectors: sales and marketing; leisure, travel and entertainment; telecommunications and IT.
Famous Hunter: Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, founder of Easyjet.
The Schmoozer
Nobody who spends more than a minute in your charismatic presence could fail to spot your ambition. You’re a born extrovert, with social skills that most can only watch and envy. Your optimism and desire to achieve, influence and impress will always take you far.
Suitable sectors: sales and marketing; leisure, travel and entertainment; telecommunications and IT.
Famous Schmoozer: Peter Stringfellow, nightclub owner.
The Grafter
Slow and steady wins the race, that’s your motto. You’re practical, methodical and unflappable in a crisis, and constancy makes you feel in control. You’ve got more staying power than most, with a determination to succeed that’s positively steely. But stepping outside your comfort zone is not one of your strong points. Make sure competitors prepared to take risks don’t leave you standing.
Suitable sectors: retail, construction, finance.
Famous Grafter: Sir Rocco Forte, hotelier.
The Enthusiast
Life’s an endless source of fascination and amusement for you. You work to live rather than live to work, but still like to gain recognition by being good at what you do. Your sheer sociability attracts others like moths to a flame and your communication skills, coupled with your natural enthusiasm, means they’re likely to believe anything you tell them. You were born to sell. Partner up with someone who looks after the business while you convince everyone else how brilliant it all is.
Suitable sectors: design; leisure, travel and entertainment; sales and marketing; retail
Famous Enthusiast: Theo Paphitis, serial retail entrepreneur.
The Mad Scientist
There are so many ideas, it’s a wonder you find time to sleep. If you’re not taking something apart to see how it works, you’re busy figuring out how you could make it work better. But this preoccupation with how things work can leave you little time for other responsibilities. Work with people who are happy to let you be creative while they do everything else.
Suitable sectors: design; telecommunications and IT; sales and marketing
Famous Mad Scientist: Sir James Dyson, inventor.
The Big Cheese
Self-expression, personal fulfilment, pursuit of knowledge, success . . . these are the drivers that take you through life. Your goals and ambitions are highly defined and nothing will stop you reaching them – but you’re not prepared to achieve them at the expense of others as your ethical side would never forgive you. In fact, you get even more satisfaction from helping others to achieve their own goals. You are a born leader who’s bound to succeed.
Suitable sectors: consultancy; telecommunications and IT; leisure, travel and entertainment.
Famous Big Cheese: Sir Alan Sugar, chief executive of Amstrad
